The people of the clouds
Work in progressEgmund is young, his mother was just killed by invaders, and now
he is the new Leader of Clan Heilingsson.
Then the summons comes. The Warpact have returned, foreign conquerers
with a history of nearly wiping out the people of the island, hidden
deep in the fog, separate from the world for thousands of years.
King Torstin — his father's oldest friend,
the man who made one kingdom out of a dozen warring clans — calls
every clan to the sea. Most refuse. Egmund goes anyway.
What he brings with him: an aunt who is the last of his family, a
warrior who raised him like a brother, and a girl called Marta, whom
nobody takes seriously and who is right more often than anyone else.
What Marta brings is a stranger, pulled half-drowned from a pond bank,
wearing clothes no one on the island can name and speaking no language
anyone has heard.
The King has held the invaders off before. He will do it again. He is
stronger than any man has a right to be, and he is certain that
strength is what love costs.
The People of the Clouds is the first book of a Norse-flavoured
epic fantasy about inherited power, the price of protection, and how
much a kind man can bear.
A draft in progress — scenes are still moving, and some are still named after their files. Thoughts welcome: me@jpogden.com
